Sandy Tan is a soil scientist with a difference: she’s a member of the Spiorad an Dúlra, people who can communicate with a sentient planet.
Sandy is a farmer on the Explorer Spaceship Carson, a traveling city of five thousand people, all committed to scientific exploration of the galaxy. Part of her job is to investigate newly discovered planets to see if the planet itself has the spark of sentient life as discovered on Earth and about 2% of planets with lifeforms.
Shy and insecure, Sandy’s job suits her well – she has no problem talking to plants or to planets – just other people. But when a planetary investigation goes horribly wrong, she finds herself the only one able to stand between a group of starving colonists – and the planet that’s trying to kill them.
