“Of course, he (Don Quixote) carried it a bit too far. He thought that every windmill was a giant. That’s insane. But, thinking that they might be… Well, all the best minds used to think the world was flat. But, what if it isn’t? It might be round. And bread mould might be medicine. If we never looked at things and thought of what they might be, why, we’d all still be out there in the tall grass with the apes.”
George C. Scott as Justin Playfair (Sherlock Holmes)
They Might Be Giants
I first saw this movie when I was young. I would have thought I was much younger, but I see it came out in 1971, and my goodness… I was already 15 years old at that time. Yet – these words quite easily describe the way I’ve always seen the world.
Even as a very young child, I have looked at the world around me, and imagined more. I guess all children do that, but I must confess that I never really grew out of it. Oh sure, I know that fantasy is not reality. But I always wish it was.
And sometimes, I just simply prefer to think it is. It’s probably a good thing that I’ve started writing books.
As a scientist, I understand the need for double-blind studies and empirical evidence. But sometimes, you just have to look around, and remember that there might be giants out there, no matter what the evidence says.
There have been times in my life that I’ve done that. That I’ve acted on that, even when everyone around thought I was crazy. I’m proud of that, and for the record? I don’t intend to stop.
And if you’ve never seen this movie, it’s a great one. I loved it when Holmes says to (the female) Watson, “You’ve got qualities.”
I’ll have to check that movie out I’ve never seen it. And I agree I think believing, hoping, imagining, that the fantasy could maybe be real. 🙂
